Description
Hill 355 area, Korea, 1952-04. The approach to a low ridge, familiarly known as Cemetery Ridge, that ran in front of the dominating features known as Hill 227 ('Fanny Hill') and Hill 355 ('Little Gibraltar') which were strongly held by Communist Chinese troops. The ridge's name was a nickname bestowed on it by its defenders, soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), partly because of the presence of some old Korean village graves on it. The nickname also reflected the soldiers' morbid humour in that they realised that the ridge was a weak and dangerous position if the Chinese chose to attack.
