Description

Australian crew, drawn from the 5/7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (5/7RAR), preparing to climb into the rear of an Australian M113A1 Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC). The vehicle is painted in United Nations (UN) colours and was about to leave the Australian compound on the last armoured reconnaissance patrol of Kigali. Shortly after this the new government of Rwanda formed by the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA), expressed its disapproval of the Australian patrol activity and APC excursions ceased. Note the UN caps and shoulder flashes worn by the men who are all carrying Steyr rifles. The callsign 31A is stencilled on the side of the APC. This APC is now in the Memorial's collection (REL30188.001). The men are all members of the Australian contingent to the United Nations Assistance Mission In Rwanda (UNAMIR).
