Jacquinot Bay, New Britain. 1945. Group portrait of the 36th Battalion, Australian Military Forces (AMF), swing band the "Soputa Stompers". The musicians in the front row are seated with their instruments behind individual banners bearing their nicknames. Left to right: "Jivin Jim" Sergeant (Sgt) Jim Huggett, "Peg Leg" Private (Pte) Dudley Quinn, "Nick" Private (Pte) Ron Winter, "Artie" Private (Pte) Merv Whittaker, "Butch" Corporal (Cpl) Harold Holloway, "Doc" Sergeant (Sgt) Hugh Marsh, "Drummer" Private (Pte) Laurie Flowers, behind "Nick" and "Artie" Private (Pte) Harry Cooper, pianist. The regular drummer was Pte Hilton Gray, hospitalised after a motor accident. In association with the Battalion concert party calling themselves "The Austerity Auditorium Players" they gave several performances to audiences made up of Australian and US Army personnel.
