NSW, c. 1917. Members of the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment (6ALH) cleaning their kit during a training exercise. Fourth from the left (without shirt) is 3662 Private Harold Arthur Cowan, an Aboriginal serviceman from Grafton, NSW. Cowan (also known as Arthur Williams) enlisted at Grafton on 1917-11-16. In his youth Cowan was an all round sportsman, a representative for the North Coast in football, and a well known boxer. Note the blankets and clothing draped over the picket fence of the building at rear.
