Lone sailor
Description
This is a statuette replica of the original Lone Sailor that is a feature of the United States Navy Memorial in Washington DC. The young man is a sturdy figure, and "the founders of the Navy Memorial envisioned this Lone Sailor at 25 years old at most, a senior second class petty officer who is fast becoming a seagoing veteran". This gift to the Australian War Memorial commemorates the on-going relationship between the Royal Australian Navy and the United States Navy.
Stanley Bleifeld is the artist of this piece, was the official sculptor of the United States Navy Memorial Foundation and also served in the United States Navy in the Second World War.
