Description
Astrolabe Bay, Madang, New Guinea, 1945-08. Buildings and tents of Headquarters, RAAF Northern Command (NORCOM), nestle among a forest of tropical palm trees on the shores of a tranquil bay or lagoon. Some of the buildings are constructed of timber, fibro and corrugated iron, while others have native-style roofs thatched with palm leaves. At centre, a small rough-hewn jetty with a makeshift pontoon attached to it juts out into the water from a sandy beach. The pontoon consists of a timber frame lashed to four empty 44-gallon drums floating in the water.
