Description
Astrolabe Bay, Madang, New Guinea, 1945-10-06. The open-air cinema at Headquarters, RAAF Northern Command (NORCOM). The stage, which has been built entirely out of the blunt ends of sago palms, is surmounted by an ornate sign which bears a crown and the words: 'RAAF NC His Majesty's Theatre'. A screen hangs down at the front of the stage. In the foreground are some fold-up chairs, logs and empty drums on which RAAF airmen sit to watch films, while a hessian enclosure (left) is the area reserved for officers. In the background (far left) is the tent occupied by 82586 Flying Officer Allen Robert Griffiths, Administrative and Special Duties (A&SD) Intelligence. (Donor J. Wheatley) (Compare image P1407/05)
