Description

Astrolabe Bay, Madang, New Guinea, 1945-08. 'Frog 'Ollow', a nickname for part of the officers' lines at Headquarters, RAAF Northern Command (NORCOM). A narrow pathway runs between tents occupied by the officers, while tall palm trees stand at the rear. At centre (right), a makeshift shower has been fashioned out of a disused tin which has been mounted on a simple wooden frame attached to a palm tree. A shower rose has been fitted to the base of the tin. At right, two 44-gallon drums have been lain on their side and filled with water to serve as a domestic water supply for the officers. One of the drums has had a tap fixed to it. A wooden frame perhaps for supporting a large water-tank stands in the foreground (right) and, beneath it, lie an empty beer bottle and a discarded tin or box.
