Kerawari River, Wewak area, New Guinea, 1945-06. Aerial view of a Supermarine Walrus amphibian aircraft of No. 111 Air Sea Rescue Flight RAAF at rest on the Kerawari River, during the rescue of the pilot of a crashed United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft (not in view). The seaplane has brought two native police boys and a member of the Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU), Lieutenant (Lt) Johnstone, who are now paddling towards the riverbank in an inflatable rubber dinghy or life-raft. On reaching the riverbank, the police boys will hack their way through tall kunai grass to reach the stranded pilot, Lt J.P. Carter from Texas, who had been forced to bale out of his aircraft when it developed engine trouble. Lt Carter had already spent three days and nights in the open, less than ten miles from Japanese forces. The Walrus was piloted by Flying Officer Neil Agnew from Lindfield, NSW. (Donor J. Wheatley) (Compare images OG3065 to OG3083)
