Kerawari River, Wewak area, New Guinea, 1945-06. Aerial view of a Supermarine Walrus amphibian aircraft of No. 111 Air Sea Rescue Flight RAAF at rest on the Kerawari River, during the rescue of the pilot of a crashed United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft (not in view). The seaplane has brought two native police boys and a member of the Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU), Lieutenant (Lt) Johnstone, who are now boarding an inflatable rubber dinghy or life-raft so that they can paddle to the riverbank and hack their way through tall kunai grass to reach the stranded pilot, Lt J.P. Carter from Texas. Having been forced to bale out of his aircraft when it developed engine trouble, he had already spent three days and nights in the open, less than ten miles from Japanese forces. The Walrus was piloted by Flying Officer Neil Agnew from Lindfield, NSW. (Donor J. Wheatley) (Compare images OG3065 to OG3083)
