Description
Garoka, New Guinea, 1945-11. The makeshift outdoors cinema (left) at the RAAF Aircrew Rest Camp known as 'Lamana', meaning 'Eternal Springs', which is located in the highlands at an altitude of 5,000 feet. The theatre stage is a simple structure with walls of matting and tightly-packed layers of grass or straw. A screen is mounted at the front. A galvanised iron shed at centre (right) is the projection room, while a thatched structure (right) may be a covered viewing area. In the foreground are well-tended shrubs that form part of the camp's elaborate gardens.
