Description

Rabaul, New Britain, 1945-10. Led by a Japanese guide and interpreter (right), Flying Officer (FO) Gene McCarthy (left) and 82586 FO Allen Robert Griffiths make their way along a jungle path to a large tunnel or cave (not in view) where Japanese soldiers had formerly hidden themselves and their equipment. Another RAAF serviceman follows at rear. All three Australians are members of a RAAF Equipment Recovery Party which is commanded by FO Griffiths. Both FO McCarthy, who is carrying a torch in the belt of his trousers, and FO Griffiths are intelligence officers serving with Headquarters, RAAF Northern Command (NORCOM).
