Lesson Point, Rabaul, New Britain, 1945-10. Informal outdoors group portrait of Japanese servicemen with members of a RAAF Equipment Recovery Party after the Japanese surrender. The men are (left to right): unknown; 82586 Flying Officer (FO) Allen Robert Griffiths, commander of the Recovery Party; Rear Admiral Sato, Imperial Japanese Navy and the local area commander; Commander Hori, Japanese second-in-command; unknown; FO Gene McCarthy; unknown; Private Kikyama, interpreter. The men, several of whom are holding cigarettes, are standing in front of the house that served as the wardroom for a unit of the Japanese Navy's Air Arm which was based at Rapopo Airfield. A sign written in Japanese characters is attached to the gable of the house. FO Griffiths and FO McCarthy are intelligence officers serving with Headquarters, RAAF Northern Command (NORCOM).
