Description

Rabaul, New Britain, 1945-10. The entrance to a Japanese prisoner-of-war (POW) camp for captured soldiers of the Nationalist Chinese Army. The gateway is a bamboo structure which the former POWs have decorated with Chinese characters and bunting of palm leaves after the camp's liberation from the Japanese. Several Japanese soldiers, who formerly ran the camp, are at work inside the gate. The entrance leads onto a parade ground on which the Chinese POWs used to parade before a reviewing platform (rear). Two flagpoles stand in the centre of the parade ground, while on either side of it are rough shelters which probably served as outdoor eating areas or messes.
