Description

Kairiru Island, New Guinea, 1945-06-18. Aerial view, taken at an altitude of 200 feet from the rear gun position on the side of a United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Consolidated B-24 Liberator aircraft, showing a dense jungle-covered hill rising from a beach on which some damaged barges and luggers are drawn up. At centre, the wreckage of part of an aircraft lies just submerged in the water. The Liberator, whose stabiliser is visible at top (left), is on a reconnaissance mission to Kairiru Island from No. 163 Crew Replacement and Training Center USAAF at Nadzab airfield. The island was still in Japanese hands at this time.
