Model 1924 Stick Hand Grenade
Description
Model 1924 [Stielgranate 24 (StiGr 24)] stick hand grenade made from metal and wood. The grenade has a wooden handle that is hollowed out in the middle to contain the fusing mechanism. The warhead is cylindrical in shape and has provision to attach an external fragmentation sleeve. It consists of a metal head which screws to the wooden handle to take the detonator. At the bottom of the handle is a cap which unscrews to enable the grenade to be activated by a friction fuse [Brennzunder 24]. The weight of the grenade is 595 grams and its length is 356 mm. The markings are illegible.
History / Summary
Standard hand grenade used by German forces during the Second World War. Due to its shape, it was often called the 'potato masher' by the British.
