Description
Kota Bharu, Malaya. 1941-07-07. The NAAFI (Navy, Army and Air Force Institute, the British equivalent of the Australian Army Canteen Service) building at RAF Kota Bharu. The building is built in the local style with an attap roof (palm leaves woven together). The sections were used for roofs and walls as the material allowed air circulation. The RAAF had two General Reconnaissance Squadrons flying Lockheed Hudson aircraft in Malaya. No. 1 Squadron was stationed at RAF station Kota Bharu, No. 8 Squadron was stationed at RAF station Kuantan. The Squadrons were forced to retreat, along with the allied forces, in the face of the Japanese attack.
