Description
Beersheba, Palestine, 1917-11. Australian soldiers stand among the ruins of a pumping plant blown up by the Turks shortly before the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments captured the town. The plant was used to pump water from Beersheba's wells. In the background (left), an Australian engineering party has erected a derrick over a well and, with a rope and pulley attached to it, is clearing the well and developing its flow of water. A sign fixed to wall of the building behind the well reads: 'Well No. (?) 1'. (Donor A. Stewart)
