Description
Beersheba, Palestine, 1917-11. Destroyed by the Turks shortly before the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments captured the town, a small railway engine (right) rests at an angle on a broken set of railway tracks. A rope and pulley apparatus mounted on a tripod over the mouth of a well (centre) has a bucket tied to it for hauling water up from the depths below. The drawn-up water is emptied into a small trough from which a sluice or chute runs away downhill. A structure like a blockhouse stands to the rear of the engine (right), while another solidly-constructed masonry building which may be a pumping station stands (left). Pipes run from one of the windows of this building into what may be a small reservoir. (Donor A. Stewart)
