Description

Canberra, ACT, 1955. A small group of RAAF servicemen stands next to the two halves of the fuselage of Avro Lancaster BI W4783 (G for George) during their task of reassembling the bomber aircraft after its installation in the Aeroplane Hall of the Australian War Memorial. The men had first disassembled the aircraft at RAAF Base Fairbairn so that it could be moved into the Memorial. To carry out the task, the men had been attached to RAAF Base Fairbairn from a variety of RAAF units, including the Aircraft Research and Development Unit (ARDU). Part of Albatros DVa Scout biplane D5390/17 is visible (right), while two Union Jacks hang above the large entrance at rear. (Donor R. Clackson)
