Description

Canberra, ACT, 1955. At RAAF Base Fairbairn, a group of RAAF servicemen disassembles Messerschmitt ME262 jet fighter W.N.500200 preparatory to moving the aircraft to the Australian War Memorial where it will be installed and reassembled for exhibition in the Aeroplane Hall. To carry out the task, the men have been attached to RAAF Fairbairn from various RAAF units, including the Aircraft Research and Development Unit (ARDU). The aircraft is attached by ropes to a mobile crane which stands to its rear. Lying on a trolley (left) are the aircraft's four 30mm MK108 cannons which have been removed from its nose. (Donor R.
