Canberra, ACT, 1955. RAAF servicemen commence the task of disassembling Supermarine Spitfire Mark II P7973 at RAAF Base Fairbairn so that the fighter aircraft can be transported in sections to the Australian War Memorial and installed and reassembled in the Aeroplane Hall. The man in the foreground (right) carrying the aircraft's nose cone is Leading Aircraftman (LAC) Johnny Waydock, while the man standing on the Spitfire's wing is LAC Peter McCracken. Both men are members of the RAAF's Aircraft Research and Development Unit (AMRU) who have been attached to RAAF Fairbairn to help carry out the task of disassembling, transporting and reassembling the aircraft.
