Collection related to the service of NX234 Padre Francis Oag Hulme-Moir, the Church of England chaplain to the 6th Australian Division Cavalry Regiment.
Torokina, Bougainville, 1945-08-15. A large crowd of Australian soldiers attends a memorial service, probably on a sports field, on Victory in the Pacific (VP) Day. The service is being conducted by NX234 Padre Francis Oag Hulme-Moir, the Church of England chaplain to the 6th Australian Division Cavalry Regiment, who is standing on the rostrum (left). Next to him, NFX70240 Captain Phillis Eileen Morey, an AANS nursing sister serving with 2/1st Australian General Hospital (AGH), reads a lesson from a lectern over which the Australian flag is draped. Behind them, other soldiers are seated undercover in grandstands that look out on the field. The front of the grandstand (left) is bedecked with the Australian flag and the Stars and Stripes flag of the United States. A row of senior Australian and American officers sits in front of the grandstand on the other side (right). A large loudspeaker is mounted on a tripod (far right).
