Description
Baghdad, Mesopotamia. 1917-03. A British gun boat (monitor) passes land forces of the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force with their horses on the banks of the Tigris River during the advance on Baghdad. The gun boat was captured by the Turks and later recaptured in the advance on Baghdad. The original caption reads `The heroism of the naval ratings on the advance is well remembered. With half their ammunition dud (supplied by a neutral country) and their craft pierced in dozens of places, they pressed on after the Turks and engaged them at every bend in the river'. (Donor R. Stanger)
