Description
Samarra (Samarrah), Mesopotamia. 1917-04-23. Interior of a railway engine shed extensively damaged by fires set alight by retreating Turkish troops. Standing amongst the rubble is a soldier, possibly a member of the 1st Wireless Signal Squadron. Rolling stock in the railway yards adjacent was not so badly damaged. It was repaired by members of the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force and was soon in use on the line to Baghdad.
