Description
Rangoon, Burma, c. 1945-08. Carrying a samurai sword , an officer of the Imperial Japanese Army steps down from the side door of a Japanese Mitsubishi Ki-57 'Topsy' transport aircraft which has just landed at Mingaladon airfield. The aircraft is one of two that are carrying Japanese envoys, including Lieutenant General Tokaza Numata, Chief of Staff of the Japanese South-East Asia Command, who are to surrender local Japanese forces in a formal signing ceremony. Behind the soldier, a green surrender cross has been painted on the aircraft's fuselage. (Donor W. Mulford) (Original print held in AWM Archive Store)
