Rangoon, Burma, c. 1945-08. After arriving by air at Mingaladon airfield, two senior officers of the Imperial Japanese Army (centre) are escorted by British Army and RAF officers to a special tent (not in view) where they will surrender local Japanese forces in a formal signing ceremony. The Japanese officer (right) is Lieutenant General Tokaza Numata, Chief of Staff of the Japanese South-East Asia Command. The two officers, who are both carrying samurai swords in hilts, are among a party of Japanese envoys who have been flown to the airfield in two Mitsubishi Ki-57 'Topsy' transport aircraft (not in view). A large crowd of British and Indian servicemen, some of them bare-chested, stands and watches in the background, while an officer crouches on the ground (left) to photograph the Japanese officers with his camera.
