Rangoon, Burma, c. 1945-08. Carrying a samurai sword, Lieutenant General Tokaza Numata (centre, left), Chief of Staff of the Japanese South-East Asia Command, is escorted through a group of British Army and RAF officers and NCOs after surrendering local Japanese forces in a formal signing ceremony in the tent (right). The general, a senior officer of the Imperial Japanese Army, is a member of a party of Japanese envoys who have been flown to Mingaladon airfield in two Mitsubishi Ki-57 'Topsy' transport aircraft (not in view). Watching from a rise in the background is a large crowd of British and Indian servicemen, some of whom are bare-chested. In the foreground (left), an official photographer is taking photographs with a flash camera. Some of the spectators in the background are also taking photographs of the event. (Donor W. Mulford) (Original print held in AWM Archive Store)
