Description
Rangoon, Burma, c. 1945-08. A Westland Lysander IIIA aircraft, probably V9303, of No. 357 Special Duties (SD) Squadron RAF stands ready to take off at the end of the runway at Mingaladon airfield. The aircraft is probably carrying three Japanese soldiers to remote areas of Burma where they will be parachuted in to Japanese forces who have not yet surrendered in order to tell them that the war has ended. Because of the long distance the aircraft has to travel, an auxiliary fuel tank has been fitted to the underside of its fuselage. (Donor W. Mulford) (Original print held in AWM Archive Store)
