Description

Rangoon, Burma, c. 1945-09. RAF pilot Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) 'Stubby' Stubbings climbs aboard his Westland Lysander IIIA aircraft of No. 357 Special Duties (SD) Squadron RAF at Mingaladon airfield. Flt Sgt Stubbings later wrecked his aircraft when attempting to land on a beach to rescue the crew and passengers of one of the squadron's Douglas C47 Dakota aircraft which had crash-landed. Stubbings suffered only scratches and bruises in the accident. The Dakota had been bringing out twenty former prisoners of war (POWs) from a remote Japanese POW camp. All of the men were safely rescued. (Donor W. Mulford) (Original print held in AWM Archive Store)
