Description
Rangoon, Burma, c. 1945-08. Three Japanese soldiers and a RAF serviceman (rear) stand on Mingaladon airfield prior to the Japanese leaving on a flight aboard a Westland Lysander IIIA aircraft (not in view) of No. 357 Special Duties (SD) Squadron RAF. The Lysander will fly the Japanese to remote areas of Burma where they will be parachuted in to Japanese forces who have not yet surrendered in order to tell them that the war has ended. As one of the Japanese soldiers (right) smiles for the photograph, another (left) holds a rolled-up white surrender flag that he will take with him on the mission. Part of a jeep is visible (right).
