Rangoon, Burma, c. 1945-08. As several RAF servicemen look on, three Japanese soldiers climb aboard a Westland Lysander IIIA aircraft of No. 357 Special Duties (SD) Squadron RAF at Mingaladon airfield. One of the Japanese soldiers, already aboard the Lysander, is standing in the cabin, while the other two await their turn to board the aircraft by way of the ladder attached to its fuselage. Perched in a foothold on the outside of the aircraft, a member of the ground crew (left) carries out final checks with the pilot sitting in the cockpit before the Lysander leaves on its flight. The aircraft will fly the Japanese to remote areas of Burma where they will be parachuted in to Japanese forces who have not yet surrendered in order to tell them that the war has ended. The Japanese will make their parachute jump from the same ladder they used to board the aircraft. (Donor W. Mulford) (Original negative held in AWM Archive Store)
