Description
Rangoon, Burma, c. 1945-08. Informal outdoors portrait of Squadron Leader George Turner DFC (right), CO of No. 357 Special Duties (SD) Squadron RAF, and another unidentified member of the unit leaning on a wheel of the squadron's Westland Lysander IIIA aircraft V9303 at Mingaladon airfield. The squadron carried out such tasks as supplying members of the guerrilla unit, Force 136, and bringing out former allied prisoners of war (POWs) from remote Japanese POW camps. To enable it to fly long distances, the aircraft is fitted with an auxiliary fuel tank attached to the underside of its fuselage. (Donor W. Mulford) (Original negative held in AWM Archive Store)
