Description
Hit, Mesopotamia. 1918-03. Two members of No. 3 Station, 1st Wireless Signal Squadron, Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force, with their horses, visiting the bitumen pits near the town. Pitch drawn from these wells was used in buildings in nearby Babylon. Large clouds of smoke billow up from the pits which presumably were set on fire during the recent battle for the area with the Turks.
