Description
Mena, Egypt, 1915. Australian soldiers probably of the 1st Divisional Train, Australian Army Service Corps (AASC), hot-shoeing their horses in the field. At a portable anvil (left), a blacksmith is hammering into shape a red-hot horseshoe that he is holding with a pair of tongs in his other hand. The smith has heated the horseshoe in a brazier filled with hot coals or charcoal which is directly beneath the anvil. Scattered at his feet are many more horseshoes which he will heat and shape.
