Probably El Dabaa, Egypt, 1915-12-25. On a bitterly cold day, five members of the 1st Divisional Train, Australian Army Service Corps (AASC), eat a meagre Christmas dinner on an unprotected piece of flat ground near the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. The soldiers are (left to right): Lieutenant John Edward Chaplin, who has a mug and an enamel plate with food on it resting on the ground between his legs; Captain Walter Ormond Stevenson, who is eating off an enamel plate; Major Albert Armytage Holdsworth, the unit CO, who is holding a dixie in one hand and a piece of food in the other; unknown; unknown, who is stirring a mug of tea and holding a bun or piece of fruit in his other hand. The men are using as a table a wooden crate on which a large teapot and some mugs are resting.
