Description
El Daba, Egypt. c. December 1943. 10142 Leading Aircraftman (LAC) R. D. Andrews, Instrument Maker, of Melbourne, Vic, (at the wheel) and 12105 LAC H. I. (Hec) Christian, Fitter IIE, of NSW, working the throttle of this home made car (buggy) called "Old Faithful". It is the pride and joy of No. 451 (Spitfire) Squadron RAAF, in the Western Desert. The owner, Joe Branch, Fitter IIA, of Port Macquarie, NSW, told how the wheels came off a bomb trolley, an Italian Gilera frame and engine was put to good use, the steering column was originally made in the Austin factories and the upholstered seats were provided by derelict Fordson truck. It can obtain a speed of thirty five miles per hour. Note the motor bike beside Old Faithful.
