Fragment of collar : 16th Waikato Regiment, Baby 700, Gallipoli
Fragment of cloth from the left side of a collar from a New Zealand army tunic. Attached to the fragment is a brass collar badge for the 16th Waikato Regiment showing an arm holding a Maori spear, beneath which is the voided number 'XVI' and a scroll bearing the Maori motto 'KA WHAWHAI TONU AKE AKE' (we shall fight for ever and ever).
This piece of collar came from the tunic of a member of the New Zealand 16th Waikato Regiment. It was found by the Australian Historical Mission on 17 February 1919 near found the graves of Australians and New Zealanders, killed on 25 April 1915 on the inland slope of Baby 700. They were probably buried where they fell by the Turks during the May armistice. This item was found with other uniform fragments on the ground around the graves.
