Melbourne, Vic. 1942-03. US General MacArthur and the Chief of the Australian General Staff, Lieutenant General Sturdee, soon after MacArthur's arrival in Melbourne. At this stage President Roosevelt suggested, and the Australian Government agreed, that MacArthur should become the Supreme Commander of all Allied Forces in the South West Pacific.
