Description
France. c. 1916-1917. Tents, with camouflaged roofs, and buildings of a casualty clearing station on the Western Front during the Battle of the Somme in World War 1, probably near Amiens. Three soldiers are pushing a trolley loaded with wounded soldiers on stretchers. Note the duckboard walkways and the rails for the trolleys that run alongside them. The rails allowed the wounded, on trolleys, to be wheeled straight onto the trains that pulled up directly beside the camp.
