Beziers, France. 1918-03-20. A surgical operation in progress in the operating theatre of French hospital no. 46 in southern France during World War 1. A surgeon and his assistant are operating. Two 'bluebird' nurses are also in attendance, Sister Dorothy Ellena Duffy acting as anaesthetist. The Sisters were part of a group of twenty civilian trained nurses, from New South Wales, who volunteered to serve in France for the Australian Red Cross during World War 1, they were known as 'Bluebirds' because of their distinctive blue uniforms.
