Woodgate, W H L (Signalman)
Diaries of Signalman W H L Woodgate spanning November 1941 to October 1945. Entries describe the boat trip to Singapore (with extended stopover in Darwin), shelling by the Japanese and experiences as a POW at Changi and Selerang. Mentions bee keeping, attending lectures, the behaviour of officers, buying goods from natives and growing vegetables, the circulation of 'furphies', working parties, and work on the Burma-Thailand Railway with attendant decline in conditions and health. The collection also includes a letter from a Dutch friend in 1946 describing continued illness and poor conditions in Singapore, new clippings, a prisoner of war medical history card, a sergeant's certificate, recipes written on the back of a prison receipt, and miscellaneous papers.
