Rome, Italy. c. 1944. His Holiness Pope Pius XII grants an audience each day to visiting Allied troops, addressing them in English, French, Polish and Italian. Seen here is an American officer kissing the Pope's ring while other troops await His Holiness's blessing. RAAF airmen serving with RAAF Kittyhawk squadrons in support of the Eighth Army were given the opportunity to visit the Vatican and talk with Pope Pius when the Italian capital fell to the Allies.
