Coral Sea, South West Pacific. 1942-05. Smoke billows into the air from the burning Lexington after attacks by Japanese torpedo aircraft. The Battle of the Coral Sea checked the proposed Japanese invasion of Port Moresby. It was the first naval engagement in history in which surface vessels did not exchange a shot. The Japanese lost the carrier Shoho and the carrier Shokaku was damaged. The Allies lost the carrier USS Lexington and the carrier USS Yorktown was damaged.
