Description
Marseilles, France. October 1944. Leaning against a burnt out Sherman tank, an airman of No. 451 (Spitfire) Squadron RAAF, surveys the magnificent cathedral of Notre Dame de la Garde, overlooking the city of Marseilles. The tank was from the 2nd Cuirassiers Regiment named 'Jeanne d'Arc' and was knocked out by an incendiary grenade on 25th August 1944. Commander, Maréchal des Logis André Keck, Gunner, Brigadier Roger Guillot, and radio operator Cuirassier Maurice Clément were killed. Driver, Cuirassier Antoine Riquelme was wounded. The tank is currently preserved in situ as a monument.
