Description
Mesopotamia. c. 1917. Line of ten members of a complete pack station of the 1st Wireless Signal Squadron, Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force. They are equipped with a mobile wireless set carried as packs on the horses on specially built frames strapped on to the pack saddles. The personnel of the station were one Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) in charge, a corporal in charge of transport, operators and drivers - all mounted. Each driver had a pack horse to lead and look after. Each operator had a distinct number of duties in the erection of the station, thus enabling a set to be erected and be in communication within seven or eight minutes. (Donor E. Keast Burke)
