Description
Gallipoli, Turkey. c. 1915-08. Interior of a traverse at Plugge's Plateau built by members of the 4th Battalion, to help protect a dugout, which was around the corner, from rifle fire from Pope's Hill. The construction of the obstacle with layers of sand bags was ordered by Captain Cecil Guildford Kimmorley Judge, Company Commander, who, with other officers, used the dugout to sleep and eat in. Note above the traverse the telephone wires which connected the Company Headquarters with Battalion Headquarters. Note also the holes in the sand bags and in the sides of the trench from shrapnel and rifle bullets.
