Description

South Vietnam, c. 1969. An observation tower, its base heavily protected by sandbag walls, stands outside a compound occupied by Viet Cong (VC) and North Vietnamese Army (NVA) prisoners-of-war (POWs). The compound is bounded by a tall cyclone fence topped by several rolls of barbed wire. Two searchlights mounted on top of the tower point down along the fenceline to discourage escape attempts at night. Part of a Nissen hut in which the POWs live is visible (far left), while in the background, outside the compound, stand several corrugated iron barracks buildings of a military encampment.
