Description

Aerial photograph of two 500-pound bombs falling away from a Canberra B20 light bomber of No. 2 Squadron RAAF during a bombing raid on a tract of dense jungle in the II Corps area. The pilot of the aircraft was probably Wing Commander Bill Hughes, who was also the squadron executive officer, while the navigator and bombing officer was probably Flight Lieutenant Ashley Clarke. The bombs they have dropped are armed with Variable Time Delay (VT) fuzes which proved unreliable. They were later replaced with Mk-117 750-pound bombs fitted with mechanical fuzes, an instantaneous one in the nose and another with a 0.5 second delay in the tail. (Formerly 200259)
