Description
A Vulcan Phalanx Close-in Weapon System (CIWS) stands under its protective housing on board the RAN Guided Missile Destroyer HMAS Brisbane shortly after the weapon's installation. A sign on the side of the weapon reads: 'Danger: This mounting may move without notice.' The CIWS was one of two such devices that were specially fitted to the ship for its deployment to the Persian Gulf to serve in the Gulf War as part of Operation Damask. The weapon's primary role was defence against anti-ship missiles.
